Project My Way - Episode One Remake

I now have a much greater respect for the time frame that the Project Runway designers work under. It was a challenge to decide what to do and then to figure out how I was going to do it. I clearly saw what I was going to remake and exactly how it was going to look. Surprise! I had to rethink what I was going to use because my first option did not work out.
I also see why they are sequestered. It is really hard to concentrate on getting something done and getting it done quickly when you have other things to take care of.
Alysen will be posting her remake a bit later.
This challenge was to make something inspired by New York City.
Here is my Project My Way Episode One remake:

This was my inspiration
Jacket before
Pants before

Finished outfit
Here's what I did:
I started with a loose fitting black velvet jacket. I marked the waist and cut it off leaving 1/2 inch for a seam allowance. I took in the sides of the top part of the jacket. To make it a bit more fitted, I added a pleat at the back and each side. I divided the bottom portion of the jacket that had been cut off into quarters. I chalked these lines so I could do the gathering later. I reattached the bottom part evenly distributing the excess fabric. I then serged this to the top part.
I took two strands of embroidery floss and gathered on the chalk lines I made earlier. I secured the floss at the waist. Two snaps were sewn at the waist.
I added shoulder pads and shortened the sleeves.
I took in the pants at the inseam and outer seam.

I am now on to my episode 2 remake. The challenge was to make outfits for a ping pong club
owned by Susan Sarandon. The winner was a uniform for the female servers.

Project My Way

Here is the winner of the first episode of season 11 of Project Runway. I love the jacket, but I have to admit, I was looking for something a bit easier for our first outfit. Oh well.... now, Alysen and I will get working on our interpretation of it.  Please look for our post later this week with our outfits.
If anyone is interested in joining us in creating the runway looks in recycled materials, please comment below or e-mail us at
We would love to hear your comments and or critique.

I have a confession to make.
Except for Downton Abbey, Project Runway is the only program I have watched from the beginning. My addiction is so bad that I will watch the past seasons when there are no new episodes. Even though I have seen them numerous times, know who wins, etc.
For a while now, I have wanted to recreate my own garment following the guidelines the designers had. I have a few dozen dyed coffee filters that I was going to use to recreate the Dollar Store challenge from a couple of seasons ago. Needless to say I didn't carry through with my challenge. But now........
Alysen and I are challenging each other to recreate the season 13 looks in recycled materials. Our challenge is to review the show on Friday/Saturday (for those who don't know, Al is in Paris which is 9 hours ahead of California) and then have our garment/s done and posted by the following Wednesday/Thursday. We are also striving to do the look in plus size, which we believe is a much under served group.
We are encouraging folks to join us on this challenge. If you are interested, please leave a comment or e-mail us at Depending on feedback, we may have folks vote on the winning design and offer prizes.
So, tune into the Lifetime channel on Thursday, January 24th (check local listings for time) or view the episode online on Friday (query project runway season 13).
For those in the LA area, I will probably have my garments on display at the Long Beach 2nd Saturday Art Walks (

Happy New Year to all!
I am pleased to say that 2012 was a great year for the Chic Chix. Thanks to the exposure we get on Etsy, we have sold items all over the world.
I recently observed the 23rd anniversary of my father's passing. I can't help but think how my dad would have embraced the current technology. He was an inventor and entrepreneur. He was one of the first people I knew who had a personal computer. I believe he would have enjoyed selling world wide.
We also had some great exposure at, a blog from the UK. One mention on Tessa's site resulted in a sale. Not too shabby. We also ended the year with a sale on new Year's eve. The champagne tasted even sweeter.
I am so lucky to be able to be creative and work with folks I love. Truly a dream come true.
We have been busy gearing up for the new year. Here is one of my new items for Valentine's Day or any other day you want to feel special:

The bodice is a pink with gold thread open weave ballet shrug with three shades of gold sweater pieces. This is a one of a kind piece. This and other new items will be posted on our Etsy site -

I will have a few other Valentine and Mardi Gras themed clothes at the 2nd Saturday Art Walk this Saturday, January 12 - If you make it to Long Beach, please be sure to ocme by and say "hi".
